It’s great to get up to go to work and realize I am already there. My morning commute consists of getting a cup of coffee, taking the dog out, and then settling behind my desk. Owning a home based business has it’s good points and bad points. If you are running your own business from home, there will be times you feel like a million dollars. There will also be those times you feel like you just cannot get motivated. But you’ll have to in order to stay ahead of the game. I’ll try to go over some of the good and bad times you will encounter along the way. Just keep in mind, that this is normal when running your own business.
Let’s start off with the good side. When you own your own home business it can be very rewarding. There is no need to deal with traffic. The gas savings alone already puts your checkbook ahead of the game. You also won’t be spending a lot of pocket change on sodas and snacks, not to mention the money you would put out for going to lunch.
Then there are all those little emergencies that come up during the year. Things like doctor visits, taking care of an overlooked bill, DMV and things like that. Now being your own boss there is not a lot of concern over asking for time off for these things. You don’t have to come up with excuses and use vacation time that you would want to spend at the beach or just taking a day off.
So what about the not so good part about being the boss? For starters, being the boss you are also the employee. You are now doing the work of multiple people. Everybody needs to be on time for work and you’re everybody. So now that you don’t have to wait in traffic, you have no excuse for being late. Those emergencies that came up and you took care of are now done. So, do you go back to work or do a little shopping. The boss in you needs you back at work. Now that you are the boss, you need to carefully look at these things.
Remember, as the boss you wear many hats throughout the day. Customers only have you to speak to when they have problems. You are going to have to bring resolutions to customer complaints throughout the week. There is also that matter of profit and loss. The responsibility of creating revenue is now completely up to you. If you are falling short of goals, you are going to have to come up with a game plan. All of the day to day activities that surround a business now rest on your shoulders.
Having a home base business is very rewarding. However, you must maintain self discipline at all times. There are good aspects as well as bad with almost all things, but if you concentrate on the good and keep moving toward it sooner or later you will diminish out the bad. Have a mind set of a business owner from the very beginning. Know that there will be long hours and many issues that will need resolutions. The long term rewards of being your own boss will outweigh the short term pain.
